In conventional L-band passive radiometer instruments, the low noise amplifier (LNA) is protected by a limiter, against unwanted Radio-Frequency Interferences. With the advent of gallium nitride (GaN), it is possible to design robust LNA Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs) which do not require a limiter at the input, or require a less demanding limiter, hence improving the noise figure of the receive front-end. Moreover, latest GaN processes have demonstrated state of the art noise figure performances. Current L-band LNAs have been optimised for narrow-band applications. However, interesting radiometer concepts for sounding the atmosphere have emerged that require wide-band L-band receivers. The objective of the activity is to design, manufacture and test an L-band wideband integrated Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) suitable for integration in Future Earth Observation passive radiometer instruments.
