Active remote sensing instruments such as Scatterometers or Synthetic Aperture Radars operate at peak power levels of few kilowatts and average power levels which can reach few hundred of watts. Ferrite switches and circulators are key building blocks for the RF front-ends of these type of instruments, performing functions such as protection of High Power Amplifier, matching functions and signal routing. Several ferrite switches are cascaded when higher isolation between Tx and Rx needs to be achieved or simply due to the high number of ports in a routing network. Insertion losses play an important role in terms of instrument performance. By careful material, topology and magnetisation point selection (for circulators), the optimum operating point regarding losses and power handling capabilities can be achieved. The objective of the activity is to design, manufacture and test C-band very high power low loss ferrite switch and circulator.
