The President of the Romanian Space Agency, Mr. Marius-Ioan Pisom and Ms. Mazlan Othman, Director of the UN Office on space problems, signed today, 4 June 2009 in Vienna, a cooperation agreement on the establishment in Bucharest of a regional office of SPIDER system.

SPIDER stands for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response, under the UN coordination.

The first negotiations meeting for the accession of Romania to the Convention of the European Space Agency (ESA) was held in Bucharest on 27 March at the Romanian Space Agency. The ESA delegation was led by Mr. Peter Hulsroj, director of international relations and legal issues. The Romanian delegation was led by Mr. Marius-Ioan Piso, President of the Romanian Space Agency. During the discussions there was set the technological and legal framework, and also there was established a preliminary timetable for Romania's accession to the ESA Convention.


Romania is the third of the former INTERCOSMOS countries to obtain the status of European Cooperating State of the European Space Agency (ESA), as the Czech Republic and Hungary. The agreement will be signed in Bucharest in the presence of Prime Minister, DL. Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu, the Secretary of State for Science and Technology, Mr. Anton Anton, the General General of ESA, Mr.. Jean-Jacques Dordain and the Romanian Space Agency President, Mr.. Marius-Ioan Piso, on 17 February 2006.
