WiMAX technology is the next generation of broadband mobile communications. The commercial implementation of this type of network will be made during 2008 worldwide and in Romania.
WiMAX is an abbreviation of Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. It is a wireless technology based on standards, which provides high-speed connections, including the Internet, on long distances. This way, in outdoors WiMAX can offer wireless access at distances up to 50 miles at speeds of 50 ÷ 70 Mbs. For fixed WiMAX it has been designed and tested 3.5 GHz band equipments. In 2006, tests were initiated in 5.8 GHz band.

Romania could have many advantages by using WiMAX technology because of the low cost of the necessary infrastructure and the broad coverage. Given that the spread of informational society's benefits depends increasingly on the availability of broadband Internet access to citizens and businesses and taking into account Romania's objective to fully integrate into the European Union, to adapt to community economical requirements and especially to increase economic competitiveness, social cohesion and quality of life, the increased use of broadband services has been identified as a major future goal. Recently, the Ministry of Communications of Romania, Intel and Alvarion have made ​​the first public demonstration of this technology in Romania. A car equipped with WiMAX crossed the streets transmitting live images in a conference room.

Project objectives:

  • to study, design and hardware and software implementation of anGNSS-WiMAX integrated navigation system
  • studying and implementing an authentication service based on location with the Wimax network communication support. This service should be implemented in the GNSS-WiMAX integrated system and will be an application of it
  • to study, design and hardware and software implementation of a WiMAX support video monitoring mobile.
  • training and / or improvement of country's expertise in some leading areas: broadband communications; satellite and terrestrial location systems; location-based authentication; tools for the development, integration and application of geospatial data; merging data from different sources; Advanced Data Processing to extract a large amount of information;
  • increased visibility for the project, the consortium members and funders.


  • studies on WiMAX system capability compared to the GSM / GPRS, UMTS, WCDMA, WiMAX, the compatibility between the WiMAX channels and GNSS information, navigation continuity problems on WiMAX support
  • technical concept of the system
  • Technical specifications, hardware and software implementation, documentation regarding the experimental model;
  • experimental model to be operated and experienced
  • report to demonstrate the functionality and utility of the system
  • presentation website in Romanian and English, updated and functional throughout the project implementation
  • scientific papers and articles published in the volumes of the works of national and international conferences and journals
  • leaflets and poster presentations at trade fairs and exhibitions.
