Objectives: Develop the key elements of a space system ontology enabling information exchange between all actors involved in the space system development and operations to support improved collaboration and increased efficiency. Description: Reliable information exchange between all disciplines, stakeholders and their tools is essential for space system development. The European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS) explained, within ECSS-E-TM-10-23A, the complexity of developing reliable information exchanges and identified the need for a new generation of information modelling methodologies and tools that capture the semantics. In line with the ECSS needs, and reusing years of academic research in semantic modelling, within the context of the Fact Based Modelling UnifyingSystem activity (FAMOUS-2, T708-305SW), the Agency has analysed how to apply semantic modelling to the European Space Business and elaborated draft specifications of software tools to develop. During FAMOUS-2, a conceptual modelling tool called NORMA [Natural ObjectRole Modelling Architect] was used for the production of the FAMOUS-2 specification and for prototyping some key concepts. Other organizations are also assessing methodologies and tools for the production of ontologies, e.g. Sysml [Systems Modeling Language, inparticular version 2] by OMG, OWL [Web Ontology Language] by W3C, OML [Ontology Modeling Language] by NASA/JPL. In this activity, it is proposed to :1) Development of (representative part of) Space System Ontology in FAMOUS-2 and in OWL, taking above inputs intoaccount2) Compare and map these Ontologies to a benchmark Space Mission Ontology (e.g. NASA/JPL one)3) Assess and evaluate the semantic modelling alternatives and select a preferred one4) Validate the selected Ontology through demonstration of information exchange between selected tools, using auto-coding for implementation.
