Space agencies summit

Between 9 to 10 January 2014, the President of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), Marius-Ioan Piso presented Romania's strategy and position in space exploration at the Heads of Space Agencies Summit (HOSA), organized by the International Academy of Astronautics in Washington.

Together with the Minister for Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technological Development, Mihnea Costoiu, the President ROSA attended the International Space Exploration Forum (ISEF), organized by the Government of the United States, expressing Romania's interest to develop research and space exploration projects through bilateral and multilateral cooperation, to contribute to national development in Romania.

On 10 January, Marius-Ioan Piso attended the Heads of Space Agencies Summit which brought together more than 30 leaders of space agencies around the world to discuss ways and new international cooperation opportunities and other topics related to space exploration, such as its economic benefits.

Romania has participated in over 40 space missions with instruments, experiments, expertise and even an astronaut. Romania is the second former communist country that became ESA Member State and the Romanian Space Agency recently celebrated 18 years of activity as an independent public organization. Currently, Romania participates in several scientific and technological missions, such as the Euclid mission which is studying the role of dark matter and energy in the development and expansion of the universe, Gaia mission which will make a 3D map of our galaxy, the Proba-3 mission - the first mission in the world using satellites flying in fixe formation, and in space exploration missions such as ExoMars. ROSA President highlighted for over 30 space agencies leaders present there the necessity of international collaboration for the success of such missions and to protect the planet from the threats posed by asteroids and comets.

Președintele ROSA, Marius-Ioan Piso a avut o intervenție în cadrul sesiunii pe tema “Space exploration: LEO and Beyond”. Misiunile LEO (Low Earth Orbit) includ cercetări cu privire la sănătatea echipajului uman în condițiile extreme ale unui zbor îndelungat, precum și testarea tehnologiilor necesare unor misiuni robotice, dar și cu echipaj uman dincolo de orbita terestră joasă.

The President ROSA, Marius-Ioan Piso had an intervention during the session on "Space Exploration: LEO and Beyond". The LEO (Low Earth Orbit) missions include research on health of manned during extreme conditions of a long flight, and testing robotic technologies required by robotic and manned missions, beyond the low-Earth orbit.

The session was also attended by: Charles F. Bolden (NASA,USA), Jean-Yves Le Gall (CNES, France), Hu Yafeng, (CNSA, China), Luis Valero Artola, (Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, Spain).
