European Space Strategy the topic of an official ESA delegation visit in Romania

on 15 September 2017
On 12 September 2017, the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) welcomed a European Space Agency (ESA) delegation to Romania. European space strategy, the national strategy for research, development and innovation 2014-2020 and Romania’s role in major ESA programmes were among the topics of the visit.
ESA’s delegation included Jan Woerner, Director General; Kai-Uwe Schrogl, Head of Strategy Department; Christina Giannopapa, Head of Political Affairs Office and Chiara Manfletti, Programme Advisor to Director General.
After a meeting with the Minister of Research and Innovation, Mr. Lucian Georgescu, ESA’s delegation went to the National Institute for Aerospace Research "Elie Carafoli" (INCAS), where ESA Director General, Mr. Jan Woerner, talked about European space strategy. After that, the Director General of INCAS, Mr. Catalin Nae, gave a presentation, followed by a tour of the Institute. ESA’s representatives then met with Mr. Anton Anton, President of the Subcommittee for Space in the Chamber of Deputies. The visit concluded with a bilateral meeting.

This official meeting consolidates the role of Romania as a key partner in European space industry and an important step in the national strategy for research, development and innovation 2014 – 2020.

Space research, technology and development are recognised in Romania as a major strategic area, a driving force for other fields. This strategic commitment is reflected by the positive evolution of the national space programme and also by the significant increase in international cooperation. During the latest ESA Council, Romania committed its participation to current and new exploration, applications and technology programmes, reaching involvement in 17 major ESA programmes.
