A completely closed life support system today cannot be considered without food production and waste recycling (i.e. food production systems have in average an efficiency of 60%, the rest being waste). Current nutrition requirements are aiming at a very accurate food quality (i.e. minerals content, carbohydrates content, amino-acids profile, fatty acids profile). Yet bed rests have demonstrated that existing knowledge and tools allowed limited prediction of meal nutritional composition and subsequently food quality. As a matter of fact, the discrepancy between prediction and actual food nutritional content was mainly due to the vegetal (i.e. plants) elements. In a general manner, the complete food production and preparation chain, which starts with the plant seed and ends with the ready-to-eat meal, impacts the food quality at several stages (i.e. plant growth conditions, harvest, storage, processing, cooking, etc.). However, this impact is today poorly understood or controlled. Moreover, modelling of food production systems are today limited to very specific and independent plant metabolisms (C and N uptake, light utilisation, etc.) but almost no knowledge exist at the overall plant level. Consequently a strong effort of plant and food characterisation is now necessary for a better understanding and control of the complete MELiSSA loop.

The activity will establish an advanced Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) concept for active debris removal for the baselined capturing technologies. The activity will include the preparation of a simulation environment (model in the loop) for verification of feasibility from a GNC perspective. This activity will assess scenarios for active debris removal stemming from the baselined capturing technologies and derive a preliminary, advanced guidance and control concept for the phasing, approach, fly around, capture and deorbitation phase (TRL 3). This will include trade-offs concerning the required sensors as well as actuator and the architecturaldesign. Following the assessment of attitude and positioning requirements, the activity will continue with algorithms analysis and evaluation for image recognition, pose identification, path planning and GNC at large. The activity will include the preparation of a simulation environment (model in the loop) for verification of feasibility from a GNC perspective. Particular emphasis will be placed on the verification of the approach towards a target in low earth orbit, precise position and attitude matching, depending on the baselined ADR scenarios, the GNC functions for safe capturing, and the control of the coupled system during de-orbitation.

The proposed activity aims to design and test a prototype of an LNA (Low Noise Amplifier) working from 37.4 GHz to 42.5 GHz for gateway application, based on European monolithic microwave integrated circuit technology. Targeted Improvements: performance willbe improved by the use of an enhanced semiconductor technology e.g. GaAs or InP HEMT (High-Electron-Mobility Transistor), and also by reducing the losses to the waveguide by direct transition from chip to waveguide. Gas chromatographs in conjunction with a spectral mass analyser for the identification of organic and inorganic compounds have beenflown or are flying already on several space missions, e.g. Huygens and Rosetta, and are in the process of being built and qualified, as for the Mars Science Lab (NASA) and for ExoMars (ExoMars). These instruments are already miniaturised and optimised in terms of mass and power consumption to a high extent. MEMS based technology however offers a potential to further reduce resource consumption and cost. This would enable for instance environmental monitoring using a swarm type of mission. Develop a database and initial population of space system simulation models. Description: Based on the portability standard and a reference architecture the structure of a library shall be defined and implemented to host reference simulation models for the use and exchange between all stakeholders in the space domain. The structure of the database shall be based on the reference architecture developed under other ESA activites. A concept needs to be defined and implemented which allows the central management and maintenance of the library, ensuring proper access control and compliance with the corresponding standards (such as the simulation model portability standard). An initial population of this library shall be developed, and support for "open" models as well as models with IPR issues has to be demonstrated.
