Within the Space Situational Awareness Programme (SSA), ESA is working on the implementation of an enhanced space weather monitoring system with the objective to improve its now and forecasting capabilities. Space weather monitoring typically requires the observation of solar wind conditions, interplanetary magnetic field strength driven by solar activity and the corresponding interaction of solar storms with the Earth environment. ESA is therefore establishing a Distributed Space Weather Sensor System (D3S) to capture the actual state by measurements to be performed at several well distributed positions in space. To make efficient use of the resources, the architecture foresees the installation of sensors either on potentially upcoming space weather satellites or on other available hosting satellite missions. Two such hosted payloads are currently being implemented on two missions: a versatile magnetometer onthe Korean Geo-Kompsat-2A satellite and a radiation monitor hosted on EDRS-C. Within this activity, ESA is initiating the deployment of two additional radiation monitors that shall provide more data for space weather monitoring purposes. In order to allow the useof these monitors for any upcoming hosting mission that is suitable for D3S, it is assumed that the monitors can potentially be placed in different orbits such as LEO, MEO and GEO but also in deep space. The activity shall make use of existing European heritage and result in the provision of two flight models.
