M5 System Studies Parallel Phase A contracts for the three M5 candidate missions.Parallel Phase B1 contracts for the selected M5 mission following the Phase A. SPICA is a Mid- and Far-IR observatory, whose key science goals include galaxy and black hole formation and evolution, resolution of the far-infrared polarisation of galactic filaments and understanding the formation and evolution of planetary systems. SPICA is a joint mission with JAXA, with payload elements funded by the Member States. The SPICA Observatory will be launched on an H3 rocket for a nominal mission of 3 years orbiting the second Lagrange point of the SunEarth system (SEL2). The payload consists a 2.5m Ritchey-Chretien telescope actively cooled to below 8 K together with the shielded cryogenic Payload Module. The two instruments are a Far-IR high-resolution spectrometer (SAFARI), including the far-IR imager/polarimeter (POL) and a Mid-IR spectrometer/camera (SMI).
