SpaceWire as defined in ECSS-E-ST-50-12C is used today in all spacecraft for high speed data connections up to a data rate of 160Mbps net per link. Modern optical and microwave instruments can already generate data rates several Gbit/s and a further increase can be expected in the future. Data at very high rates need to be transferred from the instruments to the mass memory, inside the mass memory and from the mass memory to a 26 GHz band down link or optical laser communication terminal at several Gb/s data rates. SpaceFibre is being developed to provide a standardised solution for very high speed data connections in the multigigabit range. SpaceFibre is at least 10 times fast than SpaceWire and with very similar functionality as SpaceWire like data integrity by bit error detection and correction, link flow control scalability from point to point to multi-point networks with routers. SpaceFibre, in addition provides virtual channels offering bandwidth reservation for multiple data flows over a single SpaceFibre link. . Copper cables are used for distances up to 5m. Distances up to 100m and beyond can be covered with optical fibre and by using electro optical converters. An initial SpaceFibre specification was developed in the frame of a TRP activity, which will also provides an IP core of the SpaceFibre CODEC and a demonstration of SpaceFibre that contains the SpaceFibre CODEC complemented with the non-European Wizard link (TLK2711) supporting data rates up to 2Gbps net. Based on the result of this activity it is intended to start the standardisation of SpaceFibre under ECSS in 2014. A SpaceFibre compatible implementation using the High Speed Serial Link on the 65nm ASIC technology for space from STM will support data rates up to 5Gbps net per physical link. The overall development of the SpaceFibre Interface Chipis split in two phase whereas this proposal is describing he first phase. In this first phase a SpaceFibre Interface Chip based on the 65nm ASIC technology for space from STM will be specified and designed. It will include the SpaceFibre CODEC IP-core which is available from ESA. The design work will include the synthesis and simulation of the design on the STM 65nm space ASIC library and the S7 SerDes IP block. The production and validation of prototypes will be covered in a second phase. Procurement Policy: C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl.
