Co-temporal maps of ocean surface wind, waves and current at the mesoscale remain one of the big data gaps to understand ocean dynamics. With the launch of the Sentinel-1 satellites the capabilities of providing such high-resolution information from space is significantly improved. However, fundamental limitations with mono-static SAR observation geometry has led to the investigation of bistatic companion satellites to Sentinel-1 in order to retrieve surface motion vectors. The activity Scientific Assessment of Total Surface Current Velocities (TSCV) Retrievals from Stereo-SAR aims to develop and assess TSCV retrievals from simultaneous SAR satellite observations of the ocean surface at C-band, with 1 or 2 passive follower satellites flying in convoy with Sentinel-1. The mission concept has been detailed in a separate study, the outputs of which will be available for this science activity. Objectives for this activity include the building of forward and inverse models, and to perform an end-to-end performance assessment on the retrieval.
