SATELLITE COMMUNICATION WITH WEARABLES (ARTES FPE 1A.115) – EXPRO+
8, March 2022

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-11082
Open Date: 08/03/2022 13:58 CEST
Closing Date: 09/05/2022 13:00 CEST

Recent developments in the field of low data rate satellite communication protocols are leading to new communication standards thatpotentially enable direct communication between satellites and wearable devices: clothing, bracelets, hats, watches, buttons, logos, shoes, glasses, accessories, etc. This activity would therefore explore new services and applications that might be enabled if direct communication between satellite and wearables proves possible on a commercial scale. To explore the feasibility of such services, the activity will survey relevant developments and trends in the areas of e-textiles, textile sensors, textile antennas, WirelessBody Area Networks (WBAN), interworking with smartphones, and human energy harvesting. The study should follow a multi-disciplinary approach bringing together expertise from the wearable and fashion industry, expertise in microelectronics, experience in low data rate satellite communications, and those having a forward-looking view on future personal communication services. Following the selection of several promising concepts, the activity should realise several wearable proof-of-concepts to support experimentation and todemonstrate the feasibility of such new services.
