For the development of the next generation of L-Band aperture synthesis radiometer instrument, three critical technological elements have been identified based on the experience gained from the SMOS mission.-Advanced receivers for future L-band instrument-Optical harness for future L-band radiometer-RFI mitigation techniques for future L-band interferometric radiometerThe first two developments have already been started. The objective of this third activity is to develop an on-board data processing technique to detect and to mitigate the effects of the RFI observed by interferometric radiometers. This data processing technique shall be implemented as part of an interferometric correlator breadboard and its effectiveness shall be demonstrated. In addition a design for full a correlator ASIC shall be made in order to demonstrate the feasibility of implementing the processing techniques in a space qualified ASIC technology. The correlator breadboard shall be compatible with the Advanced Receivers and the Optical Harness developed inthe two other parallel activities. In a following activity, this will allow the integration of all three elements to demonstrate the performance of the interferometric receiver pair system, which is the basic element of an aperture synthesis radiometer.
