Update Reason: Tender issue
Objective: The objective of the activity is to develop a Q-band channel model for mobile terminals served by non-geostationary constellations. A propagation receiver will be designed, manufactured and tested. A measurement campaign will be carried out in various nearly line-of-sight propagation environments (urban, sub-urban) using the Alphasat Q-band beacon in order to derive and validate the channel model. Targeted Improvements:Enabling Q-band non-geosynchronous orbit satellite systems with mobile user terminals. Description: A number of NGSO constellations employing the Q/V-band for feeder and user links have been announced. Those networks may potentially provide access to mobile users on ground with non-tracking low-to-medium-gain antennas in Near Line-of-Sight (NeLoS), similar to a terrestrial radio network. However, there are no channel models that characterise the NeLoS signal propagation for mobile users with non-directional antennas at 40 GHz. This precludes the development of Q/V-band connectivity solutions for such users. To fill this gap, the activity will develop the necessary channel models based on a propagation campaign focused on mobile users withlow gain antennas. The campaign will be performed using Alphasat’s TDP5 40 GHz beacon and will evaluate some typical link budget NeLoS scenarios in various environments with different degrees of shadowing (vegetated, suburban, urban) by identifying the percentageof time the link is either ON or OFF. The visibility measurements will be carried out in different locations with markedly different elevation angle to Alphasat to mimic NGSO connectivity. The receiver terminal to be developed in the activity for carrying out thecampaign will be based on COTS. Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs).
