The objective of this activity is to prototype, characterise and perform space assessment of an optical isolator for lasers in the visible range 600-1200nm.Description: An isolator is an essential component in many laser applications. It is used to reduce or eliminate the effects of optical feedback and reflections of the laser’s own energy back onto itself. Feedback can cause a source to become unstable with amplitude fluctuation, frequency shift, mode hopping, noise, and even damage. In particular there is a need for lowloss isolators in the 600-1200nm range, which can also perform reliably at high laser power. This activity will start by performing a literature and market review, followed by design, prototype and manufacture of a laser isolator covering the visible to shortwave infrared range. The isolator is also required to perform reliably in the space environment and therefore a preliminary space assessment will be part of the work.Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs). For additional information please go to EMITS news “Industrial Policy measures for non-primes, SMEs and RD entities in ESA programmes”.
