ESA is working together with ROSCOSMOS to establish a cooperative programme of lunar exploration, in which the Luna-Resource Lander(Luna-27) mission planned for 2020 is a major element. Part of the European contribution for the Luna-27 mission is the PILOT subsystem, for enhancing landing capabilities through high landing precision and hazard avoidance. PILOT (Precise and Intelligent Landing using Onboard Technologies) consists of several sensors, i.e. landing cameras, a 3D-imaging LIDAR and a landing processing unit with high performance avionics. The PILOT Phase B+ shall advance the definition and design of the full PILOT subsystem up to the level of PDR, including the development and implementation plan and interfaces with the Russian Luna-27 platform, also taking into account the cost constraints on the project. The PILOT Phase B+ shall also include important activities on breadboarding of critical components, as well as the preparation of Development Models of each of the PILOT elements which shall help verify end-to-end performances of the PILOT subsystem. Phase B+ will include Advanced Phase C/D activities which shall prepare the way for the CDR.
