The concept of a passive receiving small companion satellites flying in formation with an active satellite for bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging has been the subject of numerous national and international studies including (e.g. CNES interferometricCartwheel, NASA TOPSAT, DLR Tandem-L and the ESA compSAT, Earth Observation convoy studies and SAOCOM-CS). The current interest in companion satellites provided the basis for initiating a single activity in order to develop the fundamental building blocks for performance simulations for bistatic SAR missions at both C- and L-band. The scope of this activity is twofold: first, to develop, implement and test a dedicated end to end performance simulator for bistatic SAR mission using companion satellites in L- and C- band. This will include integration of existing performance tools or algorithms and the development of new ones as needed. Second, to use the simulator to assess the end-to-end performance for the L band case, using SAOCOM-CS mission concept as a study case. SAOCOM-CS isabi-static extension of the CONAE’s SAOCOM L-band SAR mission by means of a receive-only Companion Satellite flying in formation with SAOCOM, which would act as an illuminator.
