Within the Space Situational Awareness Programme (SSA), ESA has initiated the assessment of two missions currently considered for implementation to enable enhanced space weather monitoring capabilities of ESA. These missions utilise the positioning of satellites at the Lagrangian points L1 and L5. These Phase 0 or Pre-Phase A mission studies are completed and the PHASE A/B1 studies are now planned to be initiated with a focus on the L5 mission. The LAGRANGE mission to L5 considers four remote sensing optical instruments and several IN-SITU INSTRUMENTS needed to analyse the Sun, the energetic particle streams, the magnetic field and solar wind conditions, in order to provide early warnings of increased solar activity. The objective is to identify and mitigate potential threats to society and the ground, airborne and space based infrastructures. For the system studies two parallel contracts are foreseen to be implemented. The feasibility studies will address all aspects as required by the development rules of ESA including spacecraft, launcher, maturisation and detailing of mission analysis, and the ground segment configuration. Within the system study, activities for the instrumentation will be restricted to the interface determination (electrical, mechanical, thermal, structural, environmental), the accommodation exercise, and the spacecraft performance simulation as necessary to verify the instrument requirements. Additional two in parallel running studies are foreseen to be initiated for the remote sensing and the in-situ measurement instrument packages. This activity addresses the IN-SITU INSTRUMENTS PHASE A/B1 STUDY PRE-DEVELOPMENTS, which shall perform all necessary analyses and support the Phase A/B1 System Studies and initiate the pre-developments necessary to reach TRL 6 at the end of Phase B. Instruments for study are the MAGNETOMETER, the PLASMA ANALYSER, the MEDIUM ENERGY PARTICLE SPECTROMETER, a RADIATION MONITOR and an X-RAY SENSOR. Phase A until PCR shall derive the instrument concepts or baseline designs, which shall be further detailed in Phase A. After PCRit is also intended to start PRE-DEVELOPMENTS, which have been identified and outlined until PCR. Phase B1 studies will derive the preliminary system (instrument package or suite) definition and the generation of the technical requirements specifications and necessary data packages needed to start the potential mission implementation. For the B1 studies, all economic operators may contribute whose registered seat is located in member states participating in the SSA Programme, and who have indicated their wish to participate in the Lagrange Segment. Those countries are: Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Kingdom.Other countries participating in the SSA Programme may opt in for this ITT before its release.
