The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) Optical Working Group is currently addressing 3 main scenarios for high data rate optical links: i) High Data Rate scenario(Data Relay)ii) High Photon Efficiency (Deep Space)iii) Low Implementation Complexity scenario (LEO-to-ground).For each of these scenarios, a different physical layer is being envisaged due to the different mission, system and cost requirements. The high data rate scenario is the most complex scenario as it is required to support with the same specification a plethora of links from LEO or UAV to GEO or/and GEO to ground feeder links. Each of these links exhibits different channel characteristics and different practical limitations, taking into account the capabilities of the on board GEO processing. Therefore, an optimization of physical layer performance in High Data Rate optical communication links is required. The optimization shall address as a minimum: a) the channel coding b) the size of the interleaver and its interaction with the coding function c) the variability of the data rate to serve the multiple transmission profiles and users The activity shall define the different system scenarios under the general class of data relay systems that shall be addressed by the physical layer design. This will be complemented by a state-of-the-art review in the optical communication literature, but also in the general erasure channel coding literature. Before deciding on the options that will be included in the physical layer design, the on board resources and capabilities of the satellite payload shall be considered, as the satellite payload architecture will drive the selection of the techniques to be implemented. In that respect, different options for the channel coding need to be considered whenever the coding layer is terminated on board the GEO satellite or on the ground station. After consolidating the frame of the physical layer design, a software simulator shall be developed and tested against known performances. The software simulator shall be employed to optimize the parameters of the high data rate optical link in different channel conditions (e.g. Additive White Gaussian Noise, micro-vibrations channel, strong/weak turbulence channel).Procurement Policy: C(3) = Activity restricted to SMEs RD Entities.
