SMOS, launched in November 2009, has exceeded already its extended life time of 5 years. There is a need to prepare the technologyfor a future follow-on mission on L-band radiometry. Based on the SMOS experience it is proposed to develop an advanced optical harness concept which could be used for several configurations of future L-band interferometric radiometers as studied in relevant studies [RD1]. The required new optical communication system will capitalise on the experience of the successful use of the optical harness in the SMOS mission advancing with new techniques and technologies.Along with the effort on optical harness the Agency launches activities to look at the two other main parts of the SMOS-OPS payload:- The Radiometer instrument- The on board CorrelatorThe objective is that by the advancements achieved by these three activities the technologies that constitute the SMOS-OPS payload will be in the appropriate TRL so it can be adopted in a future mission program.
