The objectives of the activity are to design, manufacture and test an Elegant Breadboard Model of the Next Generation Compressor, Driving Electronics excluded, that could be scaled to answer the needs of applications in the 15 150K temperature range.As a firststep, the contractor will identify an existing Stirling type or Pulse Tube Cryocooler in the 15K-150K temperature range that shall serve as a benchmark. The Next Generation Compressor shall be matched with the corresponding Cold Finger (either Stirling Cold Fingeror Pulse Tube with inertance and buffer volume) and the performances (exported vibrations, coefficient of performance COP) shall be compared to the Benchmark Cooler.The Next Generation Compressor shall achieve the following objectives: – The efficiency of the compressor, excluding electronics, shall be improved with respect to the Benchmark cooler and reach values (PV power)/(Input Power)>85% – The exported microvibrations, without electronics control cancellation, shall be lowered to 0.3 Nrms for each axis, with especial attention to the transverse axis with respect to piston axis – The design of the Compressor shall be scalable from a 50W to a 300Winput power range. – The Elegant Breadboard Model of the Next Generation Compressor shall be designed already taking into account the common verification and product assurance aspects for flight hardware, in order to spare re-design work in a future qualificationprogram. Special attention shall be paid to controlling the alignment method, compressor performance reproducibility (PV efficiencyand exported microvibrations) and lifetime verification. – Currently existing assembly processes and materials that have been verified and qualified for spaceflight shall take preference over new ones, in order to improve affordability for the New Generation Compressor.
