The ESA Ministerial Council meeting in 2016 is called to take fundamental decisions as far as the future of the International SpaceStation. The study aims at supporting these decisions by demonstrating the value of past public investments in the International Space Station (ISS) area. This study of the ex-post socio-economic impact of the ISS programme follows similar previous studies on thedirect and indirect economic effects on the economies of the ESA Member States e.g. the Ariane 5 and Vega programme, the Meteosat programme, the Telecommunications programme, and several other analogous assessments undertaken for the Agency. The main objective ofthis study is to evaluate ex-post the direct, indirect, catalytic and induced socio-economic impacts of the Member States spending through their participation to the ESA ISS programme, globally, at European level, and within the economies and industries of each ESA Member State participating to the programmes. In comparison with the cost of the programmes, the assessment of the socio-economicimpacts shall allow the evaluation of the usefulness of the programmes in a wider perspective, going beyond the purely economic terms i.e. the non-use benefits, reflecting the social value of the discovery potential of the ISS infrastructure, regardless its ex-ante predictable actual use.
