The encapsulated nature of VMs could simplify the distribution and migration of simulators and EGSE facilities from different suppliers. Thanks to the easy maintenance and the ability of running multiple OS environments on the same machine it is easy to build complex distributed systems as well as bring together separate hardware that has to be maintained and integrated as a whole. However, the use of VMs for simulation and EGSE activities brings the need for predictable real-time computing on virtualised platforms. The guest operating system runs on the emulated hardware and is not aware that is sharing the computing resources of the host. Therefore,as the VM itself is competing for the CPU time of the host, the timekeeping in the VM may be irregular and the temporal behaviour ofthe applications may not be deterministic. The general objective of this activity is to study the effects of simulating real-timeapplications on virtualised environments. The results can be used as the basis for identifying timing problems or to know what needs to be improved for accurate simulation of flight software on Virtual Machines.
