Big Data from Space refers to Earth and space observation data collected by spaceborne and ground-based sensors, as well as other space applications such as Satellite Navigation and Satellite Telecommunications. Whether for Earth or spaceobservation, they qualify being called big data given the sheer volume of sensed data.Current developments in programmes like Galileo and Copernicus as well as science mission like EUCLID or GAIA, show how the focus shall be put on thecreation of cyberinfrastructures capable of acquiring, processing and distributing massive amounts of data in an effective way and providing the following advantages:- Reduction ofrisk, cost and implementation cycles taking advantage of cloud computing technologies.- Foster integration of services, reuse and collaboration across missions.- Enable capabilities for the increased amount of data generatedOn the basis of selected use cases and scenarios this activity shall:- By re-using, configuring, and evolving as necessary ESA’s science data cyberinfrastructure, address technologies and architectures for efficient accessto large distributed multi-mission datasets and services- Test, develop, select and benchmark the data intensive technologies needed for data acquisition, management, analysis, extraction and provision, in line with system architecture best practices promoted by ESA and Industry- Perform the technology development and adoption of the necessary standards for catalogues, archives, data collection, data distribution, service access anddiscovery in line with international standards (virtual observatories, semantic web, domain specific languages …)- Establish the procedures and develop test toolsfor incorporating in/associating to the defined platform and related distributed system new algorithms andproducts, including as aminimum the necessary provisions for guaranteed quality of service, security and multicast features- Explore Innovative proceduresfor user interaction and user services, following new interaction models defined by modern Operating Systems and mobiledevices- Validate the proof-of-concept concept in the area of data acquisition and provision of GNSS Science Services: independent Orbit determination, geophysical measurements integrated on IGS and IVS networks, ionospheric and topographic corrections.- Validate the proof-of-concept concept in the area of long term data systems preservation in the area of science operations.
