MISSION OPERATIONAL CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT STUDY FOR CO2M GLINT MODE – EXPRO +
15, April 2022

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-11265
Open Date: 13/04/2022 08:13 CEST
Closing Date: 13/05/2022 13:00 CEST

As part of the Copernicus Space Component, the European Commission is implementing a number of new measurements capabilities as expansion missions, which includes measurements for anthropogenic CO2 emission monitoring. In 2020 a consortium led by OHB has been selected for the implementation of the Space Segment for the CO2M Mission. The main observational mode is looking in nadir direction. In order to obtain better observation conditions, the satellite will also have a glint mode to measure over large water bodies and snow covered regions. The selection of (partial) orbits in glint mode is still open and needs refinement. The study shall assume the gradual build-up of the constellation. Special attention shall be given to coastal areas, which can capture the outflow of CO2 plumes from local sources like cities and large emission hot spots. This study shall also consider a constellation of four satellites including one dedicated glint mode satellite. Different input sources need to be considered for the decision process. This study will support the development of the mission operations concept.
