Objective:The objective of the activity is to design, develop, manufacture and test miniaturised circulators and isolators for Ka-band applications.Targeted Improvements:Enabling technology for highly integrated Ka-band front-ends; 50% component size reductionin comparison to today’s Ka-band products.Description:High Throughput Satellites require a large number of passive components. Integration and mass and size reduction of all components is a driving factor to reduce the complexity of the payload. Isolators are used in large quantities for inter-stage isolation to mask any mismatch between connected equipment in the receive chains. However, today’s mount-on coaxial isolators are not suitable to be integrated directly into the equipment. Recent advancements in ferrite materials make it possible to use self-biased circulators and isolators in Ka-band, for example. These do not require magnets and offer a wide range of integration possibilities. In this activity miniaturised Ka-band isolators and circulators shall be designed, manufactured and experimentally validated.
