Following the successful completion of a GSP study titled “Use of Spectral Information at Microwave Region for Numerical Weather Prediction, this follow-on activity has the objective to design, build and successfully flight-test a Microwave Hyperspectral Instrument Demonstrator for future campaign use. The new instrument will utilise a so-called ‘hyperspectral’ measurement approach, which in microwave terms means continuously sampled brightness temperature in absorption bands with high frequency resolution. This approach is expected to yield significant improvement over currently planned instruments in terms of the accurate retrieval of atmospheric temperature, humidity and hydrometer profiles for the purpose of Numerical Weather Prediction. Upon completion, the instrument is intended to be made available for scientific flight campaigns. Such scientific campaigns are however not part of this activity. It is assumed that a maximum use of existing airborne facilities and equipment will be made for containing cost, i.e., upgrade or modifications of existing facilities are encouraged, including loan of some equipment if its procurement falls beyond the budget allocated for this activity. However, the availability of all necessary hardware and software for future scientific campaigns shall be ensured.
