The subject of the proposed activity is to develop novel methods to improve thermal testing. The focus of the activity is directed towards topics such as advanced numerical methods, data processing or control techniques to support testing activities rather than, for example, improvement of test facilities or instrumentation. An important requirement is for any developments to be, as far as possible, tool independent (e.g. not embedded in test centre specific tools) and generic enough to be used for all ESA missions with minimal recurring cost. Examples of possible topics for investigation could be: – Methods to speed up phase transitions (e.g. using controlled test heaters) – Access to on-board telemetry data and availability in a centralised database alongside test acquisitions -Real time assessment of stabilisation status and estimate of error incurred with respect to the true steady state – Pre-validation of thermal control (e.g. interface fillers) and workmanship in cleanroom conditions – Exploitation of non-balance phases or dedicated system identification to correlate local effects, e.g. contact resistance – Techniques to support the efficient placement and logging of thermal sensor placement, for example direct 3D scanning and connection to CAD model. – Interactive training/support aids to support the thermal test team either during preparation or on-line during the test Expected deliverables would be study report, including demonstration during a real spacecraft test as well as any software modules (prototype TRL) developed.
