The objective of this activity is to design, build and test two (one for Ka- and one for Q-/V-band) bi-dimensional (2-D)phased array demonstrators produced in a low-profile technology for the professional market.Targeted Improvements: Enabling technology to allow the use of millimetre-wave technology in phase array antennas for the professional market.Description: The offeringof the new satellite communication systems are putting a continuous pressure on antenna performance size and costs. In particular, low-profile and low-cost high-gain antennas that permit obtaining directive pencil beam, relatively large bandwidth, and agile electronic beam scanning are demanded by the professional market. These antennas shall work in both transmit and receive in either Ka or Q/V frequencybands. The Q/V band is of interest for high data rate Point-to-Point communications. In this framework, millimetre-wave technology could provide extended bandwidth for high-capacity links in Ka-Band and Q-/V-band systems for fixed or mobile terminalswith various advantages in terms of performance, size and cost. The Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) is an example of a technology that may beconsidered. This activity is expected to provide two phased array demonstrators; one for Ka- and one for Q-/V-band, using millimetre-wave technology and supporting the following requirements:.They shall be capable of TX/RX functions. .They shall exhibit significant improvement as compared to existing products..They shall be able to scan a single beam at least up to 60 degrees from the boresight direction in all the azimuthal planes and satisfy the regulatory aspects. It is expected that in this activity a detailed trade-off between RF performance, beam steering capability and manufacturing aspects is carried out.Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs). For additional information please go to EMITS news “Industrial Policy measures for non-primes, SMEs and RD entities in ESA programmes”.
