The KUBIK equipment has been in orbit since 2006, successfully supporting the performance of several biological experiments, providing reliable performances. In particular, the high level of reliability and the simplicity of use and set-up have always been the strong points of KUBIK and are highly appreciated by the scientist and the ground personnel. KUBIK is currently installed and used in the ESA Columbus Module. On the other hand, during these several years of use, the scientists and the ground personnel responsible for KUBIK operation and sustaining engineering have identified areas where the current KUBIK design and performances can be improved to ameliorate the usability of KUBIK. Indeed, the current lack of telemetry and telecommanding does not allow real-time information on the performance of the experiment and does not allow interaction from ground to KUBIK, limiting therefore the possibility of implementing dedicated experiment protocols.
