The Copernicus missions Sentinel-4 (S4), Sentinel-5 (S5), and the Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) are dedicated to atmospheric composition. The key mission products cover various trace gases including NO2. Clouds have a significant impact on the radiation field and hence on the measurement sensitivity and the final trace gas products. In heritage retrieval schemes, this impact is typically accounted for using simplistic cloud characteristics such as spatial sample-averaged cloud fraction, top height, and optical depth. The measurement sensitivity can be affected also by more complex features such as horizontal heterogeneity at the sub-sample scale and vertical layering of clouds, bright cloud edges, and cloud shadows. At present, the impact of 3D cloud features on tropospheric trace gas products observations from the atmospheric Sentinels is not understood quantitatively. The first objective is to enhance the understanding of the sensitivity of NO2 products from the atmospheric Sentinels to 3D cloud structures. The second objective is to explore ways to improve the handling of cloudy scenes and to mitigate biases due to 3D cloud structures. This activity focuses on the NO2 product as a key tropospheric trace gas measured by the atmospheric Sentinels.
