Hyperspectral remote sensing is an emerging, multidisciplinary field with diverse applications that builds on principles regarding material spectroscopy, radiative transfer, imaging spectroscopy and data processing. Advances in sensing technology have made available already a consistent amount of hyperspectral data (mainly by airborne instruments) and experiments conducted over several sites have demonstrated great potentiality in terms of retrieval, target detection and classification. One problem in hyperspectral retrieval / mapping is the limited generalisation of algorithms. Retrieval models are based on relatively simple descriptions of the surface (e.g. homogenous) and rely on site dependent “fudge” parameters for success. With the support of more complex (heterogeneous) models it should be possible to physically understand and drive these adjustment parameters, hence bringing more consistent results over different sites. This activity aims at investigating constrains on algorithms and uncertainties on hyperspectral reflectance modelling preventing the systematic applicability of hyperspectral retrieval over a wide range of crops, forest species, canopy structures and background soils. In fact it is quite important to understand the effects for example of canopy non-homogeneity or site-related vegetation status on the spectral signatures in order to better exploit hyperspectral measurements for retrieval or classificationpurposes. This might boost existing surface models, methods and it might provide additional guidelines for the definition of futurespace hyperspectral missions. Procurement Policy: C(3) = Activity restricted to SMEs & R&D Entities.
