In recent discussions arising from the DSG Check-point review with NASA, a few technical areas have been identified for detailed investigations, laboratory tests, or screening assessments, aiming to reduce the mass and complexity of the potential ESA elements, and in the long term, for a more sustainable architecture for human exploration elements beyond LEO, and not necessarily the DSG. Thecurrent set of cold plates on the ESA Columbus laboratory module of the International Space Station have their origin in the cold plates that were developed for Spacelab (see RD1) and also used for the European Retrievable Carrier, Eureca. Considering the very challenging requirements on all subsystems to meet stringent mass targets for human exploration missions beyond LEO, there is a stronginterest to have a design with the needed performance but at a lower mass.
