Heat Transfer Host 1 is a multi-experiment research tool to be operated in European Drawer Rack 2 on the International Space Station.The instrument is planned to serve scientific investigations on heat transfer.There are currently three scientific investigations proposed to use the Heat Transfer Host 1 facility:- The Enhanced Evaporator experiment- The Pulsating heat pipes experiment- The Self-Rewetting Fluid experimentThe Enhanced Evaporator experiment studies the potential of multiscale structures to improve the evaporative heat transfer during thin film evaporation in weightlessness in a heat pipe-like configuration. The main objective is to evaluate the global heat transfer coefficient for different advanced capillary structures under steady state and transient conditions.Pulsating Heat Pipes are a novel form of heat transfer devices consisting of a meandering capillary tube closed loop, which is partially filled with a volatile liquid. They are based on phase change phenomena (i.e. film evaporation, flow boiling, film-wise and convective condensation) and capillary forces, with potential for ground-based utilisation as well as for space systems.The Self-Rewetting Fluid experiment intends to study basic fluid dynamic and physic-chemical mechanisms that occur in multi-component two-phasesystems and particularly on the interplay between phase change, heat transport, surface and bulk thermo-physical processes occurringin evaporation-based heat transfer devices, like heat pipes.Common for these experiments is that they require heating and coolingelements as well as optical observation and measurement diagnostics (infrared and greyscale cameras, heat flux, temperature and pressure sensor acquisition).Preparation discussions will be organised between the industrial development team and the science team, to optimise the scientific requirements for the next project phases in consideration of achieving best instrument performance. The activities are completed with the phase E1, i.e. the on-board commissioning.
