GT17-427GD – ADVANCED ALARM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM EXPRO+
25, August 2021

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10930
Open Date: 12/08/2021 14:45 CEST
Closing Date: 08/10/2021 13:00 CEST

Currently, spacecraft operations teams get notified of abnormal conditions when certain system parameters exceed preset threshold values. These out-of-limit (OOL) alarms are simple in nature, each referring to a single or a set of parameters or conditions and do not necessarily offer operators deep insight into a system’s condition just by themselves. Remote (standby) operators get alerted to possible problems when the Mission ControlSystem detects such system conditions using mobile phone messages (SMS). Due to thelimited nature of SMS and the lack of contextual information, it can be difficult for operators to quickly determine the relative importance of these notifications. They then have to remotely connect to the mission control system using their laptop to investigate the issue. In addition, operators sometimes may be repeatedly alerted of the same condition, as currently only basic filtering and no prioritization of alarms are available. The main idea behind the Advanced Alarm Management System (AAMS) is to improve on this situation and enable advanced local and remote monitoring of operations by performing a technology push with two approaches:Introduceintelligence to the alarm generation and notification processes by performing advanced processing of the alarm data using industrial-grade ComplexEvent Processing (CEP) technologies.Exploit the powerful capabilities offered by modern smartphone devices to presentalarms together with contextual information about the monitored system. The activity will overall improve the efficiency of spacecraft operations teams by providing a tool that can be configured to detect more complex alarms and conditions that are now detected and confirmed by manual processes. Moreover, the activity will aid to better response times in cases of abnormal conditions as the presentation of alarms will include the necessary contextual information so that the relevant persons can understand and respond to the issue quicker. The activity shall be based on a prototype version of the AAMS that has already been developed as part of a previous activity. The documentation of the prototype can be found at [RD-AAMS]. In the following section the AAMS prototype architecture is presented as background information.
