One of the biggest challenges faced by the Oil & Gas (O&G) industry today is to extract a maximum of energy from limited natural resources, while minimizing cost and impact on the environment. Meeting this challenge requires accurate and timely information on a variety of environmental parameters to enable exploration and transport of O&G resources, support operations, as well as to assess the environmental impact of their activities. EO from space offers an effective approach to quantify some of the parameters, as satellites are able to remotely monitor our environment at the global scale (even in the most remote places) in a consistent manner (in space and time). However, despite their potential utility, the operational use of EO data within the O&G industry remains rather limited because of significant barriers to access the right data at the right time. In order to address this challenge, we propose to develop a broker technology, which will enable non-EO expert users to streamline search, discovery, and access of relevant EO data and products from existing archive of open and commercial EO data and services, as well as plan for future EO acquisitions of interest (when made possible by the satellite operator). The broker technology shall build on the principles guiding the development of the Future of Internet and the Semantic Web of Data providing a common language allowing a user or a machine to rapidly crawl large databases while identifying the subset of relevant data. The broker shall then be tailored to the specific needs of the O&G sector in terms of ontology, tagging and search capabilities and applications. The long-term vision here is to enable the development of a Digital EO Data Market Place for the O&G industry through state-of-the-art data-mart brokering technologies enabling easy and rapid search and access of EO data by the industry. If Data is deemed to be the “New Oil”, one could think of the broker as a kind of extractive technology enabling the digital market place by dismantling data silos, creating new demand and economy of scale for both the users and the providers (bulk ordering).
