Originally developed as a pilot project by CEOS as part of their Integrated Global Observing Strategy, GOFC-GOLD is today a coordinated international effort working to provide ongoing space-based and in-situ observations of the land surface for the sustainable management of terrestrial resources and to obtain an accurate, reliable, quantitative understanding of the terrestrial carbon budget.The objective of this activity is to provide a GOFC GOLD Land Cover Project Office (LCPO), which shall interact with the global land cover / land use community specifically related to climate change and sustainable development. Emphasis shall be put on (1) global land cover mapping and validation, (2) REDD+ monitoring and reporting, (3) land monitoring related to Sustainable Development Goals; (4) coordination of the RD component of GFOI, and (5) communication between policy and science communities.
