The term Fundamental Data Record indicates a unified and coherent multi-instrument long-term time series of selected Earth Observation (EO) sensor data fulfilling the performance objectives of the individual missions, but also addressing improvements for quality aspects exceeding the capabilities of the single satellite systems, enhancing accuracy and stability required for comprehension and monitoring of the Earth system. The proposed activity entails definition, generation, and validation of innovative data records fromhistorical EO missions that can be categorized as Fundamental Earth System Data Records in the domain of satellite Radar Altimetry. The FDR4ALT project, part of ESA Long Term Data Preservation programme, will target the valorization and exploitation of the long-standing record of global altimetry measurements from the ERS-1, ERS-2 and ENVISAT heritage missions, with the objective of improving quality aspects and uptake respect to the existing data holdings, and ensuring continuity towards current (e.g. CryoSat-2, Sentinel-3,Jason) and future missions. The generated long-term data records shall pursue the harmonization of the different sensors by mean of recalibration and inter-satellite calibration, and shall provide a thorough uncertainty characterization based on solid Metrological principles.
