Biomass is an essential climate variable for which satellite remote sensing holds large potential to provide wall-to-wall global observations. Key in the observational capabilities of satellite data are high quality reference data, which are used for algorithm development and validation. Especially in the tropics such data is not available with sufficient quality and extend. This was recentlyalso recognized by the Global Climate Observing System and a specific action was put forward in the GCOS Implementation Plan to develop a set of validation sites covering the major forest types, especially in the tropics, at which high-quality biomass estimations can be made, using standard protocols developed from ground measurements or airborne lidar techniques. It is the aim of this activity to (1) set up such validation sites and (2) to test and demonstrate disruptive forest mensuration technology such as terrestrialand UAV lidar for estimating above ground biomass and forest height.
