Radiometric intercomparison methodologies of EO multi-spectral sensors over the PICS are based on the comparison to a reference top-of-atmosphere model. Such model is generally ‘calibrated’ onto a reference EO sensor in such way that it can mimick the sensor observations done under a broad range of observation/illumination geometries. This calibration processes is in fact an inversion of a surface BRDF model that gives best fit to the reference sensor TOA observations. This inversion process is limited to the spectral bands of the reference sensor. The spectral sampling of the reference sensors commonly used is limited (multispectral). The spectral response differerences between sensors to be calibrated and the reference sensor result into significant uncertainties when performingintercomparisons between several sensors and the reference sensor. The identified way forward to reduce these uncertainties is to characterise the spectral variability of the surface Bidirectional Reflectance Factor. The activity will consist of: 1) Characterizing the radiometric properties of the 6 PICS by performing in-situ measurements of the spectral variability of the sites ; 2) Collect sand samples and perform BRF measurements on these samples in the lab under controlled illumination conditions; 3) Create a BRF spectral library of the PICS; 4) Investigate which BRDF model best fit the lab measurements; 5) Consolidate the radiometric intercomparison methodology over the PICS in DIMITRI. Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs).
