Over the last decades, rapid advances in digital and sensor technologies, have contributed to a true geospatial revolution, radically changing the way we access, use, and produce data, thereby creating entirely new opportunities to exploit EO data for science and applications. In particular, an important trend is the emergence of Citizen Scientists, as today individuals equipped with smart phones can easily collect data, aggregate them easily with other pieces of information, and share them almost instantaneously with their social network and community, thereby becoming an integral part of a global interconnected web of human sensors. Within just a decade or so, it is expected that the influence of “crowdsourcing” will have profound implications on how we use, and validate geospatial data, thereby opening new window for exploitation of EO data in the Sentinel Era. In this context, this activity will explore how crowdsourcing capability, building on Citizen Scientists can help support development of new EO applications and missions, ranging from new observations, validation, pattern classification, disaster recovery and also using small-sat missions for education. It will demonstrate its value in a series of pilot cases, and will aim to define a methodology for continuous co-design of EO Citizen Science projects as part of the newly set-up 8-lab at ESRIN.
