The objective of this activity is to develop and test a fully software wideband (up to 36 Msymbol/s throughput) DVB-S2x demodulatorrunning on Central Processing Unit (CPU) and/or Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) of consumer hardware platforms. Targeted Improvements: An order of magnitude improved software efficiency (ratio of needed CPU/GPU processing power per data throughput) enabling DVB-S2x software modems to run on consumer hardware platforms. Description: Nowadays, the modem part of the user terminals for Satcom market is implemented on dedicated hardware components, which brings a number of constraints, such as customised production and long development cycle time, among others. There are certain Satcom market areas (e.g. automotive, IoT, multicast, VSAT) where user terminals could benefit from the use of a software modem implementation running in already existing general purpose computing hardware, thuswith lower development cycle and costs. The proposed activity aims at implementing a fully software defined wideband DVB-S2x demodulator prototype that runs on CPU and/or GPU of consumer hardware platforms. It shall be easily ported across different architectures(e.g. x86, ARM). The software demodulator prototype shall support DVB-S2x and in particular. Implementation and testing shall include outbound time slicing capabilities, with limited CPU and/or GPU power consumption over consumer platforms (e.g. tablets) up to 36Msymbol/s throughput. Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs). For additional information please go to EMITS news “Industrial Policy measures for non-primes, SMEs and RD entities in ESA programmes”.
