THRUSTER PLUME CHARACTERISATION AND ASSESSMENT OF THEIR POTENTIAL IMPACT ON SPACECRAFT – EXPRO PLUS
20, May 2022

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-11328
Open Date: 03/05/2022 11:28 CEST
Closing Date: 14/06/2022 13:00 CEST

The top-level objective of the current activity is to develop an improved experiment-based contamination model and assess the accuracy of high-fidelity tools for thruster plume contamination. This shall be achieved by conducting a detailed test campaign to characterise representative plumes of mono and bi-propellant reaction control thrusters, and using the obtained data, together with other data in open-literature, to define an empirical model able to capture contamination effects on spacecraft surfaces. The test campaign shall investigate in particular the spatial distribution of gaseous and liquid (i.e. droplet) components within the plumes, including upstream of the thruster exit plane, during the start-up and shut-down transients of the thruster.
