Sentinel-2 Next Generation will be the new European optical multi-spectral imaging mission supporting Copernicus Services related to land, coastal areas, climate change, emergency management, and security. It is designed to provide global measurements at a high revisit frequency and a moderate-to-high spatial sampling with high radiometric accuracy. The instrument on board Sentinel-2 Next Generation, the Advanced Multi Spectral Imager (AMSI) will provide enhanced observational capabilities by means of an increased ground sampling and a larger number of spectral bands compared to MSI. The potential addition of a panchromatic band (PAN) is also being studied as part of the overall system architecture. During pre-Phase 0 and Phase 0, ESA – together with the Sentinel-2 Next Generation Ad Hoc Expert Group – defined a baseline set of spectral bands for potential implementation in AMSI. Building on the outcomes of this activity, this study aims to consolidate the specifications of the AMSI spectral bands, their traceability to user requirements, the associated reference scenarios and the required SNR values and a priority ranking. An analysis of the specific requirements associated with panchromatic data (and/or very high spatial resolution multispectral data) as part of the overall Sentinel-2 Next Generation system architecture is included. The activity shall not exceed 12 months from kick-off to end of the activity.
