Launcher applications have very demanding requirements, including both electrochemical performances and mechanical environment. The current selected solutions involve accommodation of the battery using cage and dampers to buffer the extreme environmental requirements which are usually above what the cell technology can sustain. To increase the competitiveness in reducing significantly both the mass and the cost, it is needed to develop and mature a new robust power cell with a mechanical design that copes with the requirement in space transportation vehicles. In addition, in case of mechanical failure, the cell design shall maintain the electrical function. This activity encompasses the following tasks :- Identify current available power cells with respect to the launcher electrical requirements.- Improve if needed the cell electrochemistry to increase the power capability- Develop the mechanical cell design to fit with the mechanical robust environment- Provide a cell FMECA and confirm that the cell design is double failure tolerant-Provide a cell mechanical and electrical models- Perform electrical and mechanical tests (e.g. pyroshock) and correlate the models accordingly.Footnote: Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl.
