ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-10603
Open Date: 13/04/2021 12:02 GMT +3
Closing Date: 31/05/2021 13:00 GMT +3

With this ITT ESA wishes to open research opportunities focused on Mediterranean scientific priorities, aimed at exploring and exploiting the huge synergistic opportunities offered by the increasing EO European satellite capacity together with in situ observations, advanced models and novel technologies (AI, ICTs, cloud computing capacity) to enhance observations over the Mediterranean basin, advance the scientific understanding of the role of the Mediterranean region in the Earth and climate system and transfer that knowledge into new solutions for society. In particular, the overarching goals of this ITT are:1. Contribute to develop the next generation of geo-information products and observation systems for the Mediterranean region with special attention to address fundamental observation gaps to better characterise hydrological processes and land-atmosphere-ocean interactions and advance towards novel high-resolution data models that may describe not only natural processes but also human activities impacting the Mediterranean region. The ultimate goal is to develop and validate a novel and advanced set of EO-based products that together with additional information (in-situ data, model results) may provide and accurate 4D reconstruction of the Mediterranean terrestrial hydrological cycle.2.Addressing major knowledge gaps in water cycle sciences enhancing our fundamental scientific understanding of the complex processesgoverning the hydrological cycle of the Mediterranean region, including the feedbacks with human activities: e.g., water use, energy, hydro-climatic extremes, water management, hydrology and agriculture.Activities shall focus on advancing our capacity to betterunderstand, describe and predict complex and poorly understood processes focusing on hydrological processes, regional and basin level water cycle, the role of the Mediterranean in Earth and climate systems.3. Transfer novel science results into solutions for society including advanced decision support systems providing novel science-based solutions to address major needs in the Mediterranean region including, the enhancement of existing water resources management practices or the definition of effective adaptation strategies to hydro-climatic extremes in the Mediterranean region such as droughts, heat-waves or floods.
