In recent years landing on the Moon has shifted again into the focus of national, international but also privately owned commercialendeavours. With many projects targeting a soft landing on the lunar surface, the thermal control challenges associated with the lunar surface environment also experience a renaissance. ESA is investigating the European Large Logistics Lander (EL3) in order to have a high mass to ground landing capability from 2027 onwards. In parallel there are a number of science missions such as PROSPECT orEMS, technology demonstrator missions such as for example PILOT and there are also studies for in-situ resource utilisation (ISRU).Of course there is also the Moon Village concept as overarching long time vision for the return of humans to the surface of the Moon and the Lunar Gateway as an international space station around the Moon. Obviously there is also the US, China, Russia, Japan andIndia with national programs to fly missions to the surface of the Moon. And there is a consolidating set of private companies intending to provide commercial services to or around the Moon. All equipment will have to survive the challenges of the lunar surface thermal environment.
