GEOSPACE REGION AND MAGNETOSPHERIC BOUNDARY IDENTIFICATION USING THE CLUSTER SCIENCE ARCHIVE – EXPRO PLUS
20, May 2022

ESA Open Invitation to Tender: 1-11280
Open Date: 16/05/2022 10:28 CEST
Closing Date: 28/06/2022 13:00 CEST

The purpose of this activity is to develop a comprehensive dataset, providing information on Geospace Region and Magnetospheric Boundaries (GRMB) made by each of the four Cluster spacecraft, and deliver it to the Cluster Science Archive (CSA). The proposal shall include an initial list of geospace regions and magnetospheric boundaries to be included in the dataset. Henceforth this will be referred to as the GRMB list. Attention should be made to boundaries and regions that overlap with the area of geospace other missions pass though, in particular ESA Swarm but also Double Star and other non-ESA missions such as Magnetospheric MultiScale. Giventhe large number of boundaries and regions, the GRMB list may be augmented, in consultation with the Agency, to ensure maximal scientific utility of the dataset. This should include a demonstration of robust identification criteria and the validation process will include comparison with existing event datasets. The GRMB list should include (where appropriate) an indication of the directionality’ of the encounter. For example, in the case of the spacecraft moving from the solar wind to the magnetosheath, this will be considered an inbound’ crossing. Conversely, a boundary identified when moving from the magnetosheath through to the Solar wind will be an outbound’ crossing. In addition, given the dynamic nature of magnetospheric system, there will be occasions when a simple’ boundary may not be identified, for example, multiple crossings within minutes or 10s seconds. In these cases, an appropriate boundary crossing criteria should be proposed by the contractor and following discussion with the Agency this should be implemented and the resultant output appropriately documented/caveated.The output shall be ingested into and made available via the CSA to the science community (henceforth referred to as the GRMB dataset) to facilitate large-scale surveys of the data set and enhance science output of the archive. The activity shall also provide a post operations plan for subsequent delivery of data beyond the current activity, this shall include costing of to ensure a complete dataset is available up to the end of mission operations (ignoring any funding constraints, all 4 Cluster spacecraft will have de-orbited by 2026). This ensures the availability of a complete dataset for delivery during the post operations stage of the archive. Output of the tool will be in the Cluster Exchange Format appropriate for ingestion to the CSA itself and should include appropriate documentation and a data user guide.
