BACKGROUND: Moving to a heat-pipe radiator with heat exchanger interface to the cooling loop has the potential to increase reliability. This could be a significant advantage especially in long time mission where the reliability plays a significant role. In order to develop this approach, an effective and reliable heat exchanger is needed. APPROACH: The specific goals for the proposed activityare:- to identify a concept for a heat-pipe radiator on the basis of future needs for ESA exploration missions and perform a trade-off in order to identify key parameters to form the focus for development of a competitive design- to plan and perform developmentof the related means for simulation and breadboard hardware, to determine the relative performance of the heat-pipe/hybrid radiator/heat exchanger concept and a comparable fluid-circulation radiator- to apply the obtained results to outline the path to develop acompact, efficient and reliable heat exchanger with interface to a heat pipes networkThe main tasks within the scope of this activity entail:- requirements consolidation- technology trade-off review- material investigation and coupon testing- design and manufacturing of prototypes/breadboard- validation testing of the breadboard- way forward for industrialization
